The Art of Reading

It’s time to settle back into a comfortable chair or chaise longue and book in some leisurely reading time. The following books are all works of fiction but are based on the lives or works of famous artists. Well written historical fiction transports us to another place and time where we can slip in amongst the characters and get a sense of what it was like to be there and perhaps better understand what is behind the paintings and artists we know and love. The following books are on my reading list: Luncheon of the Boating Party by Susan Vreeland...

Taking time to smell the roses

Today I’m going to whisk you away on a fragrant cloud and share some thoughts about the scent of roses. Darker roses are generally more fragrant than paler blooms. Red and pink roses have more of a classic rose scent. The more petals the stronger the scent. A rose is most fragrant in the morning and when the bloom is new. The fragrance is greater in warm, moist weather and in warmer climates in general. Some roses have one scent in early summer and a different scent in late summer. If you try really hard you should be able to...

A Bunch of Roses

The poem ‘A Bunch of Roses’was written by Australian bush poet Andrew Barton “Banjo”Paterson in 1894. For a bush poet to write of roses which would have been scarce, precious and seasonal illustrates the powerful symbolism of roses associated with both love and death, and the evocative references to the scent of roses adds another dimension to this wonderful poem. A Bunch Of Roses Roses ruddy and roses white,What are the joys that my heart discloses? Sitting alone in the fading light Memories come to me here tonight With the wonderful scent of the big red roses. Memories come as...

A Rose Centred Night

What a celebration it was on the eve of Valentine’s Day, the opening of my exhibition, Awakening Around Roses, at the delightful G3 Artspace at the Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale. Fifteen paintings were revealed to the public for the very first time, beautifully hung and expertly lit to allow the roomful of patrons a chance to contemplate each of the portraits of roses and discover their different personalities. I was introduced by the Visual Arts Co-ordinator of Kingston Arts, Justin Gayner, and I was thrilled to share my story and the story behind the paintings with the audience. My...
